If your healthcare provider prescribes
Finacea® (
azelaic acid gel) to treat
rosacea, you may be wondering if there is a generic version available. This medicated skin gel is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Finacea from being manufactured in the United States.
The earliest predicable date that a generic Finacea product could become available is in November 2018, when the first patent for Finacea is set to expire. However, lawsuits or other patents for this medication may extend or shorten this time frame.
It is important to note that azelaic acid is the active ingredient in Finacea, not a generic form of it.
(Click Generic Finacea for more information on when a generic form of Finacea might be manufactured and an explanation of the difference between a "generic name" and a "generic version" of a drug.)
