Rosacea is a skin condition that can cause redness, pimples, and thickened skin on the face and sometimes other parts of the upper body. The condition can also cause eye problems, including excessive tears, sensitivity to light, and inflamed and swollen eyelids. Up to half of all people with rosacea experience problems with their eyes. Rosacea is quite common, affecting approximately 14 million people in the United States; yet it often goes undiagnosed. Some people believe that rosacea may be triggered by certain factors, such as eating or drinking spicy foods and drinks, going through emotional stress, or being exposed to sunlight or the wind. But none of these things has been definitively proven to be a cause of rosacea. Treatment for rosacea can include medications and laser surgery.
