Generic Metrogel

At this time, there are generic versions of the 0.75% strength of Metrogel (metronidazole gel); however, the 1% formulation is still protected by patents that prevent any generic versions of this strength from being made. The first patent for Metrogel 1% is set to expire in February 2022, which is the earliest estimated date that a generic version could be manufactured.

Can I Buy Generic Metrogel?

Metrogel® (metronidazole gel) is a prescription skin medication approved for the treatment of rosacea. It comes in the form of a gel that is applied just once a day (for the 1% gel) or twice a day (for the 0.75% gel). This product should not be confused with Metrogel-Vaginal®, a product used to treat bacterial vaginosis.

Metrogel is made by Galderma Laboratories, L.P. The higher strength of this medication (1%) is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States. The lower strength (0.75%) is available in generic form only; it is no longer available in brand-name form.

When Will Generic Metrogel 1% Be Available?

The first patent for Metrogel 1% gel currently expires in February 2022. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Metrogel uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Metrogel drug.

Generic Metrogel 0.75%

Initially, Metrogel was available only in the 0.75% strength. Shortly before the patent for the product was set to expire, the manufacturer switched to a 1% formula (which is still covered by patents, as discussed previously) and stopped making the 0.75% gel.

However, the 0.75% gel is still available in generic form and is made by various manufacturers, including Fougera and G&W Laboratories, Inc.
