Metrogel is a medicated skin gel prescribed for treating bumps and pimples caused by rosacea. It may also help with redness and dryness, but it is not approved for this use. Metrogel should only be used in adults age 18 and older, as it has not been adequately studied in younger age groups.
What Is Metrogel Used For?Metrogel® (metronidazole gel) is a prescription medication licensed to treat rosacea. Specifically, it is approved to treat the bumps and pimples caused by this condition. It may also help with redness or dryness, although it is not approved for treating these aspects of rosacea.
Rosacea is a chronic disease that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. Characteristics of the condition include redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Although rosacea usually affects the face, it can also affect parts of the upper body. Despite how common the condition is, many people with rosacea go undiagnosed.
Rosacea treatment may involve good skin care (see Rosacea Skin Care), medications (either applied directly to the skin, like Metrogel, or taken by mouth), and other treatments like laser surgery. Metrogel is most useful for people who have bumps and blemishes associated with rosacea.
Even for people taking rosacea medications, it is important to try to avoid triggers, such as alcohol, hot beverages, or spicy foods.
