Oracea for Rosacea

Oracea® (doxycycline) belongs to a class of drugs known as tetracyclines. Healthcare providers often prescribe this medicine for rosacea. Although Oracea is not effective at reducing redness due to rosacea, it can be used to treat inflammatory lesions (acne-like bumps and blemishes) associated with the condition.
There are many different doxycycline medications available, but only Oracea is approved for treating rosacea. At higher doses, doxycycline is often used as an antibiotic to treat infections. Oracea is different, though; it contains a lower dose of doxycycline that works by decreasing inflammation. This lower dosage helps to minimize side effects.
Oracea comes as a capsule that is usually taken once daily in the morning. It works best if you take it on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after breakfast. It is important to take Oracea capsules with plenty of water (or other fluids) while in an upright position, in order to prevent the medication from irritating the throat.
